Archery has fascinated mankind thousands and thousands of years. Whether it was on the war field or the hunting ground, it was archery which made man victorious. Archers have been an indispensable part of Egyptian, Indian, Greek and Persian civilization. These archers were highly adorned and respected; in fact special training was provided to people who wanted to master the art of archery.

Bows and arrows are the main constituents of archery. Studies have shown that the bows were developed in either early Mesolithic age or late Paleolithic age. Pines were used for making arrows.

Bows are of different types such as Longbow, shortbow, flatbow, recurve bow, crossbow and compound bow. Longbow as the name suggests is very long; the length of the bow is equal to the height of the user and in some cases even exceeds the height of the user. The limb of the Flatbow is wider and the cross-section is rectangular in shape.

Shortbow is shorter in length; it is light weight and has a short range. It was basically used for hunting purpose. In crossbow the limbs are mounted in a horizontal manner and not in a vertical manner. The compound bow is designed in such as manner that the archer is at his ease while mounting the bow.

An arrow is made up of shaft; it has an arrowhead which is at the front portion of the arrow. These arrowheads which are made of metals or some other materials are used to target points. In order to properly shoot an arrow the archer has to maintain a proper stance. The posture of the body, the eye and the way the archer is holding the bow should be proper.

Sight shooting and instinctive shooting are the two methods adopted by an archer while shooting n arrow. In instinctive shooting the archer has to completely concentrate on the target while shooting the arrow. It requires a lot of practice. Whereas in case of sight shooting the archer can adjust the pins which are there on the bows to target an object, his is relatively easy. Previously instinctive shooting was the norm but at present sight shooting is more preferred.

As the civilization started advancing materialistically, people started thinking of developing some mechanism which was more lethal and more effective in comparison to bows and arrows. Development of firearms was a step in this direction; it made bows and arrows completely obsolete.

Bows and arrows which were extensively used in wars by the soldiers gave way to firearms. Those kingdoms which did not possess firearms started losing their stronghold and were defeated in the war filed. The firearms had many advantages over bows and arrows. They had long range, they were more lethal, using them did not require lots of training and no major skill was required to use this weapons.

Today archery has become a sporting activity; some even use it for recreational purposes. Although today archery has lost its sheen but we should not forget that it has played a pivotal role in shaping human civilization.

-

As you sit there reading this, I know that you’re looking for some archery lessons that will shed some light on the different types of arrows. Well there sure are a couple of different types of arrows out there and truth be told there is no such thing as an “ultimate” arrow.

When I just started out with archery I made this mistake of buying arrows that weren’t right for my skill level. I bought a couple of fiberglass arrows that were soon to suffer a tragic death. What I didn’t know was that I had to go with wooden arrows because they were cheaper than fiberglass arrows. Time went by and I managed to break all of my arrows…go figure. Fiberglass arrows can be really brittle if placed in the hands of newbs. It took me almost a hour long talk with my friend Rick to realize that the price of an arrow won’t make you shoot more accurate.

Rick explained to me that for beginners the best arrow to use is a wooden arrow. So I listened to his advice and went on buying a bunch of wooden arrows, that would serve me for my training purposes. Although they were cheap (cheaper than the rest of the arrows), they provide the least amount of consistency brought about by the inconsistent nature of the wood. I found this to be a really frustrating thing after my archery skills got better.

After I broke a decent amount of arrows and in the process improved my aim, I was hungry for arrows that offered more consistency. I asked my friend Rick if I could try his carbon arrows. It took me some time to adjust to the new arrows but I was blown away by the performance that the carbon arrows offered. Rick explained me that carbon arrows are made out of an aluminum core and a carbon coat which makes them go faster compared to the all-aluminum arrows and at the same time they’re a lot more tougher. Clearly, buying carbon arrows isn’t a good idea if you’re just starting out with archery.

After testing out the carbon arrows with my friend Rick, I decided to head out to the local archery store to get myself some carbon fibers. I definitely needed arrows that were more consistent. Upon arriving at the store I was mesmerized by the sheer huge variety of carbon arrows they had. It was possible to get carbon arrows with different diameters, different types of fletches, arrowheads, etc.

The employee working there got me interested with aluminum arrows. She told me that aluminum arrows are manufactured with much more consistency and reliability than fiberglass and wood arrows. They can also be customized, to suit the needs of an individual archer and are less expensive compared to the carbon arrows. You could see that she was a passionate archer by the way she was helping me choose the best arrows for my skill level (and my budget).

I left the archery store with 8 new aluminum arrows that were just perfect for my skill level and also shooting style. Specialized archery stores sure are an outstanding place to get some free archery lessons. When I got back home I tried the arrows and was really happy that I bought the aluminum ones. Excellent consistency for a lower price.
